ACUFF, TEXAS is located on Farm roads 40 and 789 ten miles east of Lubbock in east central Lubbock County. The town is said to have been named for Michael S. Acuff, who reportedly arrived in the area in February, 1891. Other early settlers were the Thomas Acuff, L.O. Burford, and Jim Brown families. Acuff's first school was constructed in 1902. It was a wooden structure built from lumber hauled in from as far away as Amarillo and Big Spring. A six-room brick schoolhouse was built in 1924, and in 1925, Acuff was designated an independent school district. However, by 1942, the community's children were attending the Roosevelt school, and by 1947, Acuff was a part of the Roosevelt district.

Acuff had a post office from 1903 to 1912. During the 1940's, one church building was used for both Baptist and Methodist church services, and in 1989, the Church of Christ was the only church in the community. Acuff recorded a steady population of approximately 25 during the 1930's and early 1940's. The population rose to 50 during the 1950's and 1960's and fell by 1990 to 30, where it remained in 2000. Currently, the only businesses in Acuff are X-Chem Distributors, and Texas Star Co-op Gin (formerly Acuff-McClung Co-op Gin).

The landscape has changed a lot in 93 years......not only in the field, but at the gin as well.

The co-op, originally known as Farmers Co-op Society of Acuff, was established in 1930 and has been in operation for 94 years. The original directors were: J.B. Sherrod, Bob Park, Smith Keller, B.A. Darby, L.A. Cox, H.P. Gregory, and
L.B. Buckman. In 1970, the co-op's name was shortened to "Acuff Co-op". In 1991, Acuff Co-op merged with McClung Co-op and became Acuff-McClung Co-op Gin. In June, 2022, Acuff McClung Co-op Gin merged with Texas Star Cooperative Gin and is now known as Texas Star Cooperative Gin

In the 1950's, cotton was transported to the gin in wooden or metal trailers. In the early 1970's the module builder was developed, and cotton modules were transported by truck.

From 2007 to 2009, the cotton stripper was developed to also be able to form round bales. Round bales are also transported to the gin by a module truck....4 round bales at a time. Texas Star Cooperative Gin-Acuff ginned its first round bale in the fall of 2013.
